Te Whara Tramp – Northland

We got up at a good time to start our tramp across the head, and unfortunately the promising sunshine of early morning soon vanished and we found ourselves inside a cloud. We pressed on nonetheless through some spectacular and tropical looking (if decidedly temperate feeling) forest to dramatic peaks, convincing ourselves that it would soon clear up.

We reached Mount Lion and actually did get a decent view of the surrounding sea and countryside. Not having had enough after 5 hours of ridge walking we set off across the plains to detour to smugglers cove and around the last bit of coast of the peninsula. Of course, no sooner had we committed to our route than Eddie decided he’d had enough of happily bobbing along in a backpack for one day, and it started to rain in ernest. We jogged along looking to finish as soon as possible but eventually sunshine returned in both the sky and baby temperament, and we enjoyed passing the last cove with its WW2 ruins.

The Downside to this plan was after a 5hr ridge traverse, 2hr peninsula walk, we were now 6km by road away from our van! So we set off walking, thumbs out, hoping for a lift. About 2km in, a car actually came back out of Ocean Beach after dropping off their passengers to come and pick us up. Very nice of them indeed. Must remember to offer to pick up hitchhiker’s now to keep the thumbs-out-karma in our favour!
