We continued up the coast to Waipu coastal track and headed out to see the Pancake rocks- a lovely path, although the only way we knew we were at the right rocks was by looking at Google, as there was a whole coastline of layered ‘pancake’ rocks. We had some snacks in a little cove and a paddle before heading back to town for an ice cream.

Next stop was the caves. Expecting a couple of small chambers and thinking we might see a couple of glow worms if we were lucky, we donned hiking boots and headtorches, slung up an Eddie and headed in. We were impressed. It was actually a good sized river cave and a few chambers in the gloworms were as countless as stars in the sky. We continued traversing the stream way heading over some mildly ambitious boulder strewn bypasses before reaching suitably awkward passage and deciding to be responsible parents and turn back. We didn’t actually explore it to completion! Real cave!

Happy with our achievement, we continued north to ocean beach on on Whangarei head in good time to park for the night.
