Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach- Coromandel

As predicted, we woke up to the sound of rain. Heavy, constant rain. But you don’t fly halfway around the world to be put off by a bit of water…. so we donned our waterproofs and sandals, wrapped up Eddie in his big fluffy waterproof jacket and set off on the hour walk to Cathedral Cove.

Funnily enough, we could count the number of other people we saw out on one hand ( it was exactly 5). It wasn’t actually too bad out, and bonus, we had both beaches and cathedral cove channel to ourselves! It still looked epic and impressive in the rain, with a nice stormy sea adding to the atmosphere. We took many pictures to prove we were there, then back to the campsite for pie. This is apparently a thing in NZ, having hot pie everywhere, and we are big fans!

Having made the most of the worst part of the day, it was now low tide, so off to Hot water beach we went, shovel in hand, to dig ourselves a hot tub! After scalding our feet by the sea for a while, we located a cooler pit further back, which once enlarged, was a perfect 3 man tub sat at about body temperature. Perfect for babies. The little shark had a great time splashing about, and digging holes is also great fun! As a bonus, the cafe we rented a shovel from was awesome, great food, friendly people and fast wifi! Finally, off to Coromadel forest park to camp at the starting point for tomorrow’s adventure.
