The Pinnacles- Coromandel

The Pinnacle the Miracle! (Ok, no one outside if Mulu actually says that….) The day started grey, very grey, wet and in a cloud, and then we started walking uphill.

Through the forests, past the landslides, over the wobbly bridges. Everything was still in cloud when we got to the pinnacles hut 2.5hrs later…. so we sat, had lunch, and tried to decide If the weather was getting better or worse…. Worse. Rain came down harder now, and visibility dropped even further! After another 1/2 hr, Eddie had finished the seaweed rice cake he’d charmed off a stranger, so we geared up and set off anyway. We arrived at the top in cloud. But then the sun started to come through, and the clouds slightly parted. It was epic.

After eating 2nd lunch at the top, the skies had fully cleared and we could see all the way to the Pacific. As it was now nice, we opted to complete the round trip and walk the longer route back, complete with old railway tracks and a river crossing.

Estimated walking time, 4hrs up, 5hrs down. Reward: McFlurry!
