Denmark- Zealand & Lolland

Escaping Copenhagen we woke up to another stunning day and started it with a bike ride around a Fort and a paddle in the sea, before driving off to a forest park to find some monsters.

After spending a long time reassuring Eddie that they were friendly monsters that did not eat children (or at least good ones anyway) we found the wooden sculptures Little Tilde and Thomas on an exciting bike ride through the woodland. Eddie turned out quite a fan, after he realised they did not eat children but enjoyed having sticks and pine cones stuck through holes in their tummies creating excellent entertainment for all involved. After all that excitement we headed to a beachside car park for the night.

The next day we started with a wander and a bike ride around a castle for aristocratic spinsters, then up we went for a clifftop walk along some of the highest cliffs in Denmark. Spoiler, they aren’t very high…. But that does mean it only took a short climb up the 23m lighthouse at Stvens to get a cracking view over a whole load of Denmark & Sea.

The clifftop walk was nice too, with a really good icecream shop in Højerup!

After planning to have an early stop and chilled beach afternoon for multiple days without success, we made it to our sea view camping spot at 4:30pm. Jumping platform, nice sand, sunshine, living the dream . Eddie declined the jump. He did armband up and go swimming in the sea! He was so pleased about this that he immediately wanted to call Grandpa and let him know. 2 tired boys in bed let Cat and I each have a late night and early morning dip.

The heat wave finally broke over Denmark, nearly a week after the UK 😆 so a van based adventure at the Knuthenborg Safari park! Elephants! Rhinos! Giraffes! Zebras! Monkeys! We even got to stand on a walkway high in the trees as the Tiger keeper threw large chunks of animal ( i.e. a whole leg of something much bigger than a dog) to the waiting Tigers.

Strangely, but well received, this Safari park also had a runaway train rollercoaster. Eddie at 100.000001cm tall was super excited to go on. The operator agreed with my precise measurement (including sandals and hat!), Saying he’d keep an eye on us to see if Edster was ok. The beaming smile in Eddie’s face was a clear sign, boy loved it!

We went on, with Mummy, then Daddy until it closed, when the operator then went to run the log flume!

Why a log flume at a Safari? No idea. Why the steepest in Europe? No idea… Guess no-one else knew either as after cat got in with the opening rush crowd,  Adam rode it all by himself. No-one to deflect the blame for the slightly wimpish sounds….

The last thing we saw at the Safari, and indeed in Denmark, was the Dinosaur area. Now, these were the best animatronic dinosaurs I’ve seen. But someone didn’t get the “kid friendly” part of the brief. Walking through the woods, it was only a few dinosaurs in before Eddie started being scared, with the feasting carnivore on 1 side of the path with 3 mates on the other side being the final straw. For the best really, as he didn’t see the incredible robots that were T-Rex had just killed Mummy Stegosaurus….

Sammy, however, wasn’t bothered in the slightest by the scary dinosaurs.

So not your usual destination for Brits on tour, but we loved Denmark! Especially in a heatwave (for them, over 20degC!) Super friendly, easy for vans, loads to do especially if you like doing it by bike!.
