Seeing how much Eddie loved the cave with a boat trip in Czechia made us keen to go to another that would blow his mind- Postonja Jama, a show cave with a train inside. We decided it was too far off route very much not being on the way from Vienna to our next destination, Zagreb, then pretty much en route (at the thundery playpark!) changed our minds and bombed it to Slovenia to go to the cave.

As expected, Eddie’s mind was blown! We had the additional bonus of visiting the ‘cave zoo’ while we waited for the next train- a cavern well decorated in itself that housed numerous cave insects addition to the famous Postonja ‘little dragon’ (the Olm, or proteus anguinus) that were discovered in the system.

We explored the cave by train and on foot and no-one was disappointed- the place is massive, and every bit covered in calcite formations. The 3.5 km by train ride was far from just a way to get to the nice stuff- it took us through passages filled with formations including an enormous ‘dance hall’ en route, and then we were guided through 1.5km long walking tour before reaching the concert hall to get the train back to the surface.

After ½ a day at the cave, time to get our culture on and go for a metropolitan city wander. Ljublijana is topped off with an impressive looking castle rising above the city, so that had to be our aim. Even better for small boys, and well all of us in the heat, there was a funicular railway to get us to the top!

We followed Frederick the Dragon’s adventure tour around the castle, the echoing cistern the only part that Eddie joined in on more than the adults! Peak of the tour was the tower, clearly the highest place in town, with the biggest flags.

Slight diasapointment came when Cat realised she wouldn’t be getting Ad & Eddie to work On the “Man powered well” to fill up the water bottles, modern mains pressure had arrived! Dinner time had us searching for something Slovienian to eat. 1 word answer: Dumplings. Pork Dumpling & Vegetable dumpling for mains (these were enough to feed the 3 of us, flippin huge!) followed by Choco-Banana dumpling and mango yoghurt dumpling. This set the 3 of us dumplings happily waddling off into the night to put our feet up.
