Like the Queen (or maybe now the king?) We decided Adam would get two birthdays- actual one and a big party later once we’ve been to the shops, having accidentally found ourselves in the middle of a national park with no cake to be found and very minimal van supplies of birthday treats!

We woke up to our view of the mountains and clouds just high enough to justify a drive through the winding roads of the park to the other side of it, a village called Spilaio, stopping for a quick van lunch of sandwiches en route as everywhere we passed was closed at midday on a Monday!

At Spilaio we went on an adventure along barely marked paths to find a castle, and on conquering it and finding a Greek flag among the ruins headed back down the hill to a viewpoint into the Portitsa gorge.

Deciding we’d done just enough walking in the threatening rain for one day we retreated to the local taverna, which gave us an incredible meal of local grilled meats and fried cheese which we all devoured (along with half a litre of wine for Adam) then drove down to the bottom of the gorge for a wander along the Portitsa ancient stone Bridge, admiring the cliffs behind it in the last of the daylight.

We slept down by the gorge and bridge ready to see it in the proper daylight and had a few whiskies to celebrate, planning exciting adventures and what we were going to buy as a reward when we eventually find a shop!
