Adam had done some swatting and found out something pretty awesome: it’s actually really easy to walk up to the crater of the most active volcano in Europe! Being very alert for any warning tremors or suspicious belching of smoke (it does feel a bit risqué after seeing the remains of Ancient Pompeii) we’d booked our slot a couple of days before and so we headed up to camp halfway up after our day in Naples, ready for an early start.

We gor a shuttle bus to 1000m then trekked up the final few hairpins to the crater, then wandered along admiring the viewpoints with unexpected (and very cheap!) Kiosks selling wine and snacks. We couldn’t resist a quick glass of a local one at the top with a peanut biscuit then it was back down to the van.

On the way down we noticed an abandoned kids ride in car- deciding it was our duty to take it off the national park (and all the guides being very pleased about us removing this eyesore) we picked it up to take home to Daddy’s workshop to see if the motors can be replaced to give it a new lease of life. On the meantime, we drove to the coast for a swim on the beach and Eddie enjoyed immensely being pushed around our car park campsite on it.
